The Internet quite literally changed the world. It’s not that these stories on love, courage and inspiration didn’t happen in previous years, just that we weren’t aware of them. this is a story about a woman many have never heard of, but she is a woman is has changed the world, if only in a small way.

The journey of life becomes an inspiring story if one is able to hold onto one’s inner courage and inherent goodness amidst challenges. For this single working mother raising her two sons has become a beautiful experience of personal growth, and she happily credits her endearing patience to the spiritual discipline of Falun Dafa.

Being an educationist for 30 years, Dr. Harvinder Kaur has spent her life nurturing, teaching and empowering others. Having served as a principal of five schools in the states of Odisha, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh in India, Dr. Harvinder learned very early in life that spirituality is the key to harmony. Talking to NTD India, this inspiring lady shared how her heart was looking for a path that could help her understand herself better—an internal quest kept knocking at her soul until the day she discovered an ancient meditation system.

I have always tried my best to be an honest person and wanted to live a purposeful life. As an educationist, I got to experience the diversities of life—from working in beautiful places like Mussoorie to challenging tribe settlements at Daltonganj in Jharkhand,” she told NTD India. “Life is perplexing. At some places you encounter excitement and at other places you come across disappointment. I have somehow always enrolled myself in some spiritual institutions during challenging phases. I was always appreciated for my work, and I always took my work as my spiritual duty.”

But this experienced educationist believes that parenting is unlike teaching, and her journey as a mother has given her countless opportunities of spiritual growth—it’s something that unfolds almost every day.

Dr. Harvinder came across Falun Dafa (also known as Falun Gong) at the 50th Conference of Principals ASISC(2007) in Bangalore. Falun Dafa is an ancient meditation system based on the universal moral values of Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance, and includes of five simple exercises. She believes true spiritualism has a contagious effect and the best way for parents to teach values to children is to live by the principles themselves.

“During the past 10 years of my practising Falun Dafa, I have lived my life with the values of Truthfulness, Compassion and Tolerance. As I started letting go off anger, ego and those negative elements from my thoughts and mind, I began feeling lighter. It’s like a bottle filled with dirt—the more you empty it, the more it can float in water,” she said.

“Parenting is about educating your child about life, and the best education happens by the way of life—parents must lead by example. Your child watches you all the time and imbibes the values you practice in life. Witnessing firsthand how I strive to live by higher moral standards in day to day life, even my sons have imbibed these values,” she added.

Dr. Harvinder’s eldest son is a budding actor in Mumbai. As a mother, she’s proud that despite immense stress and pressure her son never compromises with his values.

“He has a fast paced life but he hasn’t forgotten the values that his mother holds close to her heart. From sponsoring education for a girl child to many big and small decisions in life, he has adhered to what he imbibed from our small family,” she said.

My younger son also practices Falun Dafa. He’s like any other youngster who has his own dreams and aspirations, but the one thing that helps him stand apart is the perspective with which he looks at the small and big things in his life,” she said. “Instead of thinking ‘what mamma will say,’ he considers focusing on whether his behaviour and thoughts are aligned to truthfulness, compassion and tolerance.”

Because my meditation practice taught me how to control my anger, in whichever school I worked, people often called me the ‘cool principal,’ while my sons call me ‘the iron lady,’” she added.

This brave mother has proven by the virtue of her spiritual faith that being “strong” is being compassionate, being “cool” is being responsible and being an “iron lady” is the potential to lead by example.

Falun Dafa (also known as Falun Gong) is a self-improvement meditation system based on the universal principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance. It was introduced to the public by Mr. Li Hongzhi in 1992 in China. Although it’s currently practiced by over 100 million people in 114 countries, this peaceful meditation system has been subject to brutal persecution in China since 1999.
